We are not organic. We are honest.

Plenty of companies call themselves “green” and leave it at that. We would rather show you what we use, why we use it, and what we skip. Our program is a hybrid: the best of synthetic products where they work best, and organic soil builders to feed what is underneath. The goal is simple: a thick, green, weed-free lawn with as light a footprint as we can manage, for your family and your pets.

John and Karen Pelliccio have run this business from New City since 2001. Every choice below is one we made ourselves, and several of them cost us more than the alternative. That is part of why we are not the cheapest company on your street. It is also why we never make it up by calling you in July to sell you something.

What goes on your lawn

Six choices that set our program apart.

No 2,4-D

Our weed control is Horsepower, a blend without 2,4-D that handles the tough ones like violets, ground ivy and clover. It costs us more. We think it is worth it.

Spot spraying, not blanket spraying

A badly infested lawn gets a full treatment to get it under control. After that, we treat the weeds, not the whole yard.

You always know what went down

After every visit your technician leaves a note with exactly what was applied and any instructions, like how long to keep kids and pets off. No guessing.

No neonicotinoids

We stopped using them on lawns in 2022, years before New York’s ban takes effect in 2027. For grubs we use Acelepryn, which the EPA classifies as a reduced-risk product.

We feed the soil

Our fertilizer has been custom-blended to our own spec since 2003, with Branch Creek TriForce: seven strains of beneficial soil bacteria plus humic acid that build healthier soil over time.

Summer is about water, not nitrogen

Our summer round has zero nitrogen. High potash and a wetting agent help water soak into dry soil instead of running off, so the lawn stays greener through July heat. It also carries our surface-insect and tick control.

Trees and shrubs too: four visits a year for ornamentals up to 10 feet, from spring horticultural oil to winter protection for evergreens. How our tree & shrub program works →

What we will not tell you

You will not hear us call a lawn product “safe,” “natural” or “chemical-free.” Those words get thrown around a lot in this business. The truth is that every lawn product, organic or synthetic, has a label with directions and precautions, and the most important one is simple: keep people and pets off until it is dry. We follow every label to the letter, we use less product wherever we can, and we tell you exactly what went down after every visit.

“I have been using Lawn Doctor for a few years and I am always satisfied with the service as well as the pricing. Most recently I had 1/3 of an acre aerated, seeded and fertilized for a very fair price. The technician did a great job and was very careful not to disturb flower beds while doing a very neat job. Would definitely recommend the service.”

“I’ve been using Lawn Doctor of Rockland-Pascack Valley-Saddle River for several years, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. I originally switched to them after having a disappointing experience with another lawn care company.”

“James did a great job, thank you for putting grass seeds on some of the bare spots. Timing was perfect, it rained for a couple of days after 1st application. Thank you”

Questions about kids, pets and products

Is lawn treatment safe for my dog and kids?

Here is the honest answer. Every product we use is EPA-registered and applied by trained technicians exactly as the label directs. The label is clear on the main precaution: keep kids and pets off the treated area until it has dried, usually an hour or two. Your technician leaves a marker flag and a note after every visit so you know when we were there and what went down. Anyone who promises more than that is selling something.

Is Lawn Doctor safe for dogs?

We can only speak for how we do it here in Rockland and the Pascack Valley. We chose a weed control without 2,4-D, dropped neonicotinoids in 2022, and spot-treat weeds once a lawn is under control instead of spraying the whole yard every visit. Less product down means less for paws to walk through. Follow the same rule as any lawn treatment: keep pets off until it is dry.

How long do I keep pets off the lawn?

Until the application has dried, usually an hour or two depending on sun and humidity. If you have a dog who has to go out, tell us. We can treat the yard in sections or plan the visit around your schedule.

Do you use organic products?

We use a hybrid program, and we will not call it organic, because it is not. Our fertilizer is custom-blended with Branch Creek TriForce: seven strains of beneficial soil bacteria plus humic acid that build the soil. Our weed and insect controls are carefully chosen synthetic products, because they work and we can use less of them. We would rather tell you exactly what goes on your lawn than hide behind a label.

Written price. Same technician. A real person on the phone.

The only thing between the lawn you have and the lawn you want is a phone call.
