Why isn’t there a price on the website?
Because every lawn is a different size and a different condition, and we would rather give you one honest number than a teaser. We measure your lawn, put the price in writing, and it does not change mid-season. About a third of the people who ask us for a quote sign up, which tells us the price is fair once you see what is in it.
Do you mow?
No. We handle the health of the lawn: fertilization, weed and crabgrass control, grubs, aeration and seeding, lime, and tick and mosquito control. Your mower or your landscaper handles the cut. Mowing at three inches or higher is the single best thing you can do between our visits.
Do I have to water after seeding?
Water if you can; light and often is better than heavy and rare. If you cannot, that is what Hydra-Guard is for. A backyard we seeded in Nyack in late September 2026 was never watered by the homeowner and had filled in two weeks later. We show those photos on the Hydra-Guard page. Watering still gives you the best odds; Hydra-Guard gives you a margin for error.
What is Hydra-Guard?
A soil treatment that helps the ground hold water instead of shedding it, so the lawn gets through July and August heat and new seed survives a dry week. Our own field research helped shape the program, which Lawn Doctor now offers nationally.
What is Poa annua and why does it matter?
Annual bluegrass: the pale, seedy grass that shows up in April and dies out in June, leaving thin spots. It germinates in the fall, so fall is the only time a pre-emergent does anything about it. If you saw it this spring, ask about our Poa control service in October.
Something is digging up my lawn at night. What is it?
Skunks or raccoons going after grubs. That is a grub problem, not an animal problem. Grub prevention is built into all three programs; if the damage is already there, we treat the grubs and seed the torn areas.
Why do you put lime down?
Rockland and Bergen soils run acidic, and acidic soil locks up fertilizer so the grass cannot use it. Lime brings the pH back toward neutral, which makes everything else we apply work better. Fall is the best time.
Do you serve New Jersey?
Yes. Hillsdale, Westwood, Woodcliff Lake, Township of Washington, Park Ridge, Montvale, Emerson, Saddle River and Upper Saddle River, River Vale and Old Tappan. Our New Jersey number is (201) 664-4358; the same office in New City answers it.
Who will be on my lawn?
The same technician every visit. Each of ours runs a dedicated route and has been with us for years. Every new lawn also gets its first year under Jean-Marc, our quality-control manager, who walks it between treatments.
What happens after I send the quote form?
Penny or Karen calls or texts, usually the same or next business day, to confirm the address and what you are interested in. We measure the lawn and send the written price. If you say yes, the first visit is usually within a week, weather permitting.
Will you keep calling me to sell more services?
No. You pick one of three programs and that is the plan for the season. If we see a problem on your lawn we tell you, but there are no monthly sales calls.
When should I seed?
Late August to mid-October. After about October 15 there are not enough warm days left for roots to set. If a lawn is in rough shape we will seed in spring too.
My lawn is mostly shade. Is it worth it?
Usually, with the right seed and honest expectations. We will tell you which areas can carry grass and which would be better off as beds or ground cover.
How does payment work?
Your price is set by your lawn’s measured size and put in writing. Our monthly payment plan splits it into equal payments, up to ten, ending in November or December, interest-free with a credit card on auto-pay. Or prepay the season for 3% off. Refer a neighbor and earn a $50 credit.
Do I need to be home?
No. Your technician leaves a note or text after each visit with what was applied and any instructions. If a gate is locked or a dog is out, he’ll call the office and we’ll reschedule at no charge.
What about dogs and kids?
Keep everyone off the lawn until the application has dried, usually an hour or two; we leave a flag and a note. Dog spots and other bare patches are what Patch Rx is for, and it can be added to any program.
Which Yard Armour program do I need?
Seasonal is four services from spring through fall and covers most homes. Year-Round adds two tick services, around November and March, for households with dogs or kids in the yard all winter. Deer ticks are active any day above about 40°F.
Can I buy tick and mosquito control without a lawn program?
Yes. Yard Armour is available on its own. First-year lawn care customers also get a complimentary lawn tick application, applied with the summer service.
When does the first visit happen?
Usually within a week of your written price being approved, weather permitting. In spring, crabgrass pre-emergent has to go down before the soil warms, so we schedule those first.
Is your program organic?
Our standard programs use custom-blended fertilizer with targeted weed and grub control, applied by licensed technicians. If you want a natural-based program, ask; we’ll tell you honestly what it can and can’t do on your lawn.
Written price. Same technician. A real person on the phone.
The only thing between the lawn you have and the lawn you want is a phone call.
